Bernie Madofff is off to jail. I applaud this. If I understood the sentencing correctly, he will be eligible for parole in 150 years, that seems reasonable to me. What does not seem reasonable, is that he wants us to believe that he managed a $50 billion company all by himself, and no other employee of his company ever suspected or participatedd in the Ponzi scheme to end all Ponzi schemes. Puh-leeze! From my experience, the information highway in any company runs at about 100 MPH, which would indicate to me, that anyone who touched any account in any way, knew what was going on.One of the bits of disclosure that I found interesting was that Madoff''s daughter happened to marry an employee of the SEC, someone she met at Daddy's company. So...........the situation begs the question, did she marry him to keep the secrets, or did he fall in love with her and then found himself in a Solomanian position, and opted for wife over job.
Mrs. Madoff. She casually states that she should be able to keep the $67 million dollars that is currently in her bank account as well as the $7 million home she enjoys in NYC. Maybe it's just me......but I say, NOT. Where did the $67 million come from ? I want to see her 1040's. How did she earn it? If I am not mistaken, she was listed as her husband's bookkeeper. Shouldn't she be joining him an adjacent cell?
Part of me does not feel sorry for the folks who thought that they were entitled to invest in this exclusive fund; but I do feel sorry for the folks who had their entire philanthropic investments with this swindler. Wiping out charities or endowments is worthy of a Dante-ian Hell.
Through all of this, I keep asking......where was the SEC? Why did no one pay attention? I can only assume that there were enormous pay-offs to keep everyone quiet and I am hoping that the US Government has the intestinal fortitude to go after everyone involved in this scheme, and bring them down, punish them appropriately and put regulations in place that will penalize severely anyone who aids or abets in such a scheme. Greed, this is all about Greed, is nothing ever learned? 1929 was about greed, and look where it put us.
