Okay I confess, I am a hallmark channel junkie. Not all year long, mind you, just in the month of December. Starting December 1st, they have been running Christmas movies, feel-good, cheesy, tear jerking, you already know the ending Christmas movies.
I do not know why I am addicted to these, but I am. I have gone so far as to make sure the DVR captures a new one, though I must admit most of them are oldies but goodies. Most stars featured are from what Hollywood calls its "B" list. Last night I watched one that had Roseanne Barr's ex-husband, Tom Arnold, posing as Santa and as his daughter, (do not remember her real name) was the oldest girl on the series Full House. The story was predictable, I figured out where it would end prior to the first commercial break, but I continued to watch it to the very end nonetheless.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a fondness for holiday movies in general. I always watch White Christmas when it is on, and I never miss A Christmas Story when that's telecast, can never get enough of the leg lamp or the tongue stuck on the metal pole. I also like Miracle on 34th Street, the original one with Natalie Wood. The remakes just do not cut it.
I recently watched a Hallmark Hall of Fame original movie and sat through every Hallmark card commercial because they were about Christmas, and 2 of them were tear jerkers and required a hankie. The commercials, not the program!
I no longer watch the animated Christmas productions as there are no longer little ones around who insist on seeing them, and quite frankly, I do not miss them a bit. I think I overdosed on them when I was younger and I have no need ever again to watch Rudolph, a Grinch, or a little round headed kid. (although I do like the music associated with this one).
My all time favorite Christmas movie is It's a Wonderful Life. I love Clarence the angel, and Jimmy Stewart is ideal as George Bailey, and every year I hate Mr. Potter, Lionel Barrymore, more and more. Bedford Falls is the perfect name for the town, and Donna Reed plays the perfect GF.
I own a copy of this and watch it every year. It has gotten to the point that I know the dialog so well that if it is edited for TV, I can tell you exactly the scenes that were cut.
In December I morph into a true TV junkie, much, much more than any other time of the year. I just gotta have my feel good, life is wonderful, everything will turn out all right holiday movie fix.
