Beauty - It's All in the Eye of the Beholder

I watched Oprah yesterday (DVR'd it actually) and she was showing, that globally, Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

If a Japanese woman happens to be born with curly hair, major catastrophe! She will spend the rest of her life in salons undergoing hair "relaxing", followed by hair straightening with hot irons. If she does not do this, she is considered a pariah.

An African tribe considers long necks a true sign of beauty, so women begin at an early age to place tight rings around their necks to achieve the elongated look that is considered beautiful. Brazil has 4 magazines devoted entirely to cosmetic surgery, with boob jobs being the most often performed surgery there.

Mauratania, a country located in the northwest region of Africa was by far my favorite for what they treasured as beauty in women....ready for this...chunky women with big butts. Can you imagine this! Living in a country with no weight watchers, not Lite anything, and the bigger you get, the more you are admired, coveted and wooed! Their traditional dress is a similar to a sari, but more loosely draped, I could definitely live the rest of my life in one of those. They are colorful, made of cotton and are full length. And do you know the best part to this wonderful culture of Mauritania? Men need to be skinny to be deemed attractive! Oh sweet justice.

I'm thinking with this body of mine, perhaps, just perhaps there might be a bit of Mauritanian heritage in me, and I was pre-destined to look like this. I think Fate just dropped me in the wrong country, American ...... Mauritanian yep they sound amaziningly similar. Anyhow, that's my new story when it comes to excess baggage. You gotta love Oprah!
