Fashion is Not for the Faint of Heart

It is finally spring here in New England, and except for the brisk mornings, the temp has been hovering around the mid 60's to the low 70's. Enjoyable! So, I decided that it was time to "switch" the closets. That is, take all of the darker, heavier, winter wear and bring them to a closet in my spare room, and in that same closet, take out the spring and summer wear and bring it to my everyday closet. Except to my dismay, there was not much to bring out. I immediately thought to myself, "Who came in and stole my clothes?", and then in a mili-second I burst out laughing - who would want my old worn out Spring clothes? Then it hit me, even I did not want them, in fact that was exactly why I threw most of them away last fall instead of making the annual closet switch. Right about now I'm thinking that that was probably not the brightest thing I have ever done. Now, instead of having tired looking spring clothes, I have none. Which means, I have to go shopping.....not one of my favorite things to do.

I think I hate shopping because when it comes to designing women's clothes, each designer, (manufacturer) uses their own standards for sizing. You could be a perfectly respectable Large in one clothing line, and if you tried on a size Large in another line, you would find it so tight that right before your eyes you will morph into a hoochie mama. Not a good look.

Pants, jeans and dresses I have been told, all have their own unique Cut, which means most women have no idea what size to buy. I will bet that most women, at any given time, could have 3 different sizes of jeans in their closet that all fit, and the only difference is that they are made by different manufacturers. So a size 10 in one line is really a size 12 in another line except of course when the 10 could become an 8 in another line. Say What ???????

Men do not have this problem. Pants with a 34 inch waist and a 32 inch leg are always the same size whether it be dress pants, khakis or jeans. So once a man figures out his size, he can pretty much pick out what he wants, pay for it and call it a day.

Women on the other hand, need to find a pair of jeans that they like, and make sure that they are also available in one size smaller and one size larger, because you never know how a designer sizes his clothes. This is precisely why when I find something that fits, if it is available in multiple colors, I buy them all. It is also why I hate shopping and why I now am kicking myself in the kiesta for throwing out my oldie but goodie spring clothes. It is May and if I do not get my butt into the stores any time soon, I will have missed the spring fashions and be looking at the up-coming fall duds. What a way to spend a perfectly glorious spring day... in a shopping mall, trying on the same pair of pants in 3 different sizes in the hopes that one of them may fit!

I am not an extravagant person, but if I ever win the lottery, I am never again going into a dressing room with arms filled with clothing of various sizes, I am going to hire a designer to make clothes specifically for me and by God they are going to fit me the first time I put them on.

A gal can dream.
