Ahoy Mr. Hawk- All You Can Eat Squirrel Buffet

Last fall my sweet daughter dug up hundreds of daffodil bulbs that previous owners had planted on her property. She wanted more lawn and less gardens. She brought me a box full of daffodil bulbs, numerous varieties, none of which I could identify from the bulb itself. So one crisp but still semi warm late October day, I spent about 3 hours planting bulbs throughout my gardens, both in the front and back yards. Lots of work, lots of bending, lots of Advil. But they got planted.

This morning, as miserably cold as it was, complete with swirling snow slapping me in the face, I had to smile, as the bulbs that I planted closest to the foundation of my house had popped up and I spied about 3 inches of greenery above the hardened soil. Happy, Happy day! So I went over to take a better look and on inspection also found half chewed bulbs just sitting ontop of the soil........Squirrels!

It is a good thing that I planted hundreds of bulbs, and a better thing that they were free from my daughter, because I think those rats with fluffy tails dug up about 1/2 of what I planted.

I should not complain too much, because a few Spings ago my gardens had beautiful tulips growing, and I did not plant any tulip bulbs, ever ! I can only surmise that someone lovingly planted tulip bulbs which were immediately snatched up by a squirrel who decided to place them in my perennial beds. The purloined tulips were beautiful and continue to bloom in my gardens, probably much to the dismay of the person who ordered the bulbs in the first place.

I also have peanuts in the shell planted throughout my gardens as there is an elderly gentleman in the neighborhood who enjoys feeding the squirrels and his peanuts get planted all over my yard.
We have a hawk that occasionally circles in the air above our property, and I hope he sees all the "fresh meat" running around my yard, it would be a veritable buffet for him. I welcome him to the dinner table, I would like to be able to say, "we're serving squirrel".
